Nuit Blanche directed by Arev Manoukian - A Short Review

Nuit Blanche is a short film by Arev Manoukian I recently found on Vimeo. The film aims appear to be to capture a moment of which two strangers connect over a city street. The film is shot beautifully with seamless composition. The slow motion is breathtaking and CGI in the piece are some of the most realistic I have seen. Not to mention the brilliantly composed music by Samuel Bisson.

However as I was watching this I couldn't help feel I had seen this somewhere before. In many ways it could easily be compared to the slow motion sequences that often feature in Zack Snyder's films. But on further consideration I began to recognize the borderline plagiarist similarities to the Dead Island trailer. With this in mind though Nuit Blanche was produced before the game trailer so it is possible that they did take some influence from Manoukian's film.

But I digress; the film should be measured on its own merits and not on our understanding of similar works. And with this in mind the film is an example of what can be achieved with modern technology in synchronism with the classical romantic arc type. With this in mind it packs a strong emotional punch on the audience with some very high-end special effects, but at the heart it remains the story of two star-crossed lovers meeting on a cold winters night.
